2.4 Analysing Momentum

Momentum, p = mass x velocity
- a vector quantity
- unit : kg m/s

Principle Of Conservation Of Momentum
- The total momentum of a system will remain unchanged unless acted by an external force

                     m1 u1 + m2 u2 = m1 u1 + m2 u2

- TIPS ON HOW TO SOLVE MOMENTUM PROBLEM:
1) Draw your own cartoon
2) Lable the direction of motion by using arrows
3) Label the mass & velocity with correct units
4) Write this formula:
            m1 u1 + m2 u2 = m1 u1 + m2 u2
5) Substitute value correctly and make sure you put `negative' sign if the direction is opposite.

Picture will be uploaded during this holiday...
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Happy CNY holiday!

Hands-on activity 2.3:
Analysing motion using a ticker timer

Aim: To determine displacement, average velocity and acceleration

11February 2010 (4Cekap)

Everybody is busy setting up the runway to study the linear motion.

4 Cekap!!! Let's get ready the track for our "F1 car" :)

After marking the 10 dot-spaced strips on the ticker tape, now is the time
to cut & paste the tape on the graph paper...
Yes!!! We're the 1st group to come out with our own tape chart!

Very long tape chart! Why?
The longer the distance between the dots, the faster the car move!
So our car break the record! Haha...

Job well done 4 Cekap!
Here's some extra info.
1. When ur runway is
very steep, ur car will move down very fast.
2. When ur car move very fast, the distance between the dots will be very far.
3. When the distance between the dots will be very far, your tape cart will betoo long.
To solve this problem, that's why we can make 5 dot-spaced strip.
So, it doesn't mean that all the time we must make 10 dot-spaced.

10 February 2010 (4Setia)

Stephanie, Ian,..., Angeline in action!
Rewarded as the fastest group
to come out with the result today.

Desmond: "I will hold the ticker timer, otherwise it will accelerates
together with our "F1 car"

Desmond's F1 car! Haha....Any comment?

"Here i come....1,2,3!!!....accelerate!!!
Voon, don't forget to analyze and calculate my acceleration from the ticker tape, ok?"
Voon: "No worries turtle, Leroy had make ur tape chart..
Will calculate ur acceleration in no time :)"

a = (v - u)/t

u = initial velocity
v = final velocity
t* = time for the change of velocity
(*total time minus time for 1 strip)

I reward this team as 4 Cekap most efficient team today... Why? Read followings:
Kuhan : Ling Siaw Xie, read carefully...do not make parallax error
Bertrand: Yea...parallax error will lead to inaccuracy!

David: Parallax error occur when the observer is careless...
Our Siaw Xie is always carefull :)
Jonathan
: I agree with you!

1.5 Analyzing Scientific Investigation

My dearest BL's students...

This is the basic subtopic for Physics SPM Paper 3.
Please be alert on how to state:

1. Inference : RV is depended on MV
2. Hypothesis: When MV increases, RV increases.

Today Salina's group (4Setia) awarded as "The most efficient group". Why?
They are able to finish the experiment in time. Keep it up girls!
Salina's group consists of Salina, Nur Hidayah, Farah Fadhillah & Azwanina.

Showing Timothy, Idris, ............ & Tay (4 Setia)conduct experiment to prove their hypothesis,
"The bigger the weight of an object, the bigger the pulling force"
18 Jan 2010

To determine the sensitivity of some measuring instruments

Lee (4 Amanah) and friends determine the accuracy of voltmeter.

Dear BL's student, try to answer this:

1. What is the use of anti-parallax mirror in the voltmeter/ammeter? Explain. (2 marks)
2. What is the use of rachet in micrometer screw gauge?
(Please send your answer by using `comment')

Esther, Senorita, Neetasha & Syazwanie (4 Amanah) together
determine the accuracy of measuring tape.
What is the accuracy of the measuring tape?

Chapter 1 : 1.3 Understanding Scalar & Vector Quantity
Hands-On Activity 2.1 : Idea of distance & displacement, speed & velocity

Amelia, Felicity, Idris & Syed (4 Setia) as the time keeper
learn how to use the digital stopwatch

Mitchell (4Cekap) is at the starting point with timekeeper, Juliana.
This activity is to determine Mitchell's distance, displacement, speed & velocity
Video showing Ian (4Setia) jogging arou nd the lab.. :)

Dear F4 BL's...
By the end of this activity, you must know that vector quantity has magnitude & directionScalar has magnitude only but no direction.

Example :
Vector : Force, momentum, acceleration
Scalar : Energy, Power, Work
