Fun With Archimedes' Principle

Yesterday lesson 'Application of Archimedes' Principle" with 4Setia was fun. By the end of the lesson my dear 4Setia knew that this principle is used in the rising/diving of a submarine, ascending/decending of a hotair balloon and in a hydrometer.

Interesting activity on creating a 'hot air balloon' by Samantha & Bernard of 4Setia 2011...
I wonder can anybody suggest a better way to make sure the hot air balloon they created fly upright?

From Chapter 3 (Forces & Pressure):
Archimedes' Principle  states that
For any object (fully/partially) immerse in fluid (liquid/gas),
"Buoyant Force = Weight of fluid displaced"

From Chapter 2 (Forces & Motion):
a) If the object is floating, the net force = 0 since it is stationary
So "Buoyant Force = Weight of the object"

b)If the object is sinking/decending, net force is not zero
So "Buoyant Force < Weight of the object"

c)If the object is rising/ascending, net force is not zero
So "Buoyant Force > Weight of the object"

Means that in order to solve problem involving this principle,
we need to really understand the definition & relate it to net force....

Experiment 3.1
To determine the relationship between the weight of water displaced and the buoyant force

4Amanah 2011
Kevin, Michelle, Edwin, Jacelyn...

The result:

where
a - Weight of the object in the air
b - Weight of the object in the water (Apparent Weight of the object)
c - Weight of the empty beaker
d - Weight of the beaker and the displaced water
e = apparent loss in weight = Buoyant Force = a - b
f = weight of displaced water = d - c

So from the table above, which group is the winner?
Haa...well done to group 5 & 6  for ur success in proving the Archimedes' Principle!

'Mimi Chocola', Zulfikar & Brenda...happy faces :)
I love to see students smiling faces..

Problem Solving
Format: Paper 2 (Section B)

Diagram 1 and 2 show two identical hydrometers are used to measure the density of Liquid P and Q.
Observe the diagrams and compare the followings:
1. The weight of the hydrometer.
2. The buoyant force acting on the hydrometer.
3. The level of the hydrometer (float higher/lower)
4. The volume of liquid displaced
5. The Weight of liquid displaced
6. The density of the liquid
Hence, State the relationship between the density of the liquid and the volume of liquid displaced.

Inventing A Hydrometer

4 Setia's students with their successfully made hydrometer using test tube, cotton & ball bearing.
Hydrometer is an instrument used to measure the density of a liquid.
Now my question are:
1. How are u going to callibrate ur hydrometer?
2. How to increase the sensitivity of a hydrometer?
3. What is the best material can be use to create a hydrometer,
if it is use to measure the density of an acid?

Physics Video Making Competition 2011

My dear creative SMKBL's students,

Our Physics Department is organizing "Physics Video Making Competition 2011" for SMKBL Form 4 and Form 5 students...You can make a creative/ fun/ funny/ interesting video as long as it is related to Physics SPM syllabus. It can be about Force, Pressure, Heat, Light, Waves, Electricity, Electromagnetism, Electronic or Radioactivity...Here are the rules.

Rules:
1. Form a group consists of maximum 10 students
2. Discuss and create a 3-5 minutes video of physics using any software
3. Hand-in your application to me in a cd on or before 30 June 2011

Reward:
As a reward you will enjoy this:

1. You will be given perfect score for Construct No. 5 in PEKA.
2. Depends on the quality of physics knowledge in your video, it will be upload in this blog
3. Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Best Physics Video Of The Year

Tips:

1. You can become the actor/actress/singer/playing music...
2. Add caption n background music to make it more interesting
3. You can cut the movie slot that hv physics principle and combine them using movie maker & add captions
4. Video about the experiment...Use Paper3, Section B format...from inference till the analysis (graph)...
(You can get the apparatus from me...give me the material list)

If you have any problem, please do not hesitate to ask me. You can contact through emails, my blog and my facebook fanpage...anytime. All the best! Cheers!

Key To Open A Door

En Shahlan, my hardworking lab assistant absent today for a good reason...As usual, other lab assistant need to open our physics lab door...But the problem is...the door cannot be open although they use correct key! Dear` all, what is the moral of this real story?

Now, let us relate this to how u learn physics...Physics involved calculations...To solve physics problem, we need to memorise the formula...Some of my students are able to memorise the formula but cannot sole the problem...This is just like u have key but cannot open the door...Hence, u really need to know the right technique to use the key (formula), only then u can open it (solve problem). Cheers!

Double Rainbow

It was raining again today..Due to heavy traffic jam, I arrived at school at 7am...It took me half an hour to drive from the main road to the school entrance which normally took only 2 minutes :(....Luckily my day was 'brighten' by my 2 dear students...Alvin 5Cekap & Salina 5Setia were on duty at the hall. Salina ask me to look at the sky...Wah! Amazing...i saw not only one but two rainbows! A double rainbow! Really hope this double rainbow will cheerish our day...Let today be better yesterday. Cheers!

The following pictures were taken by Alvin...Thanks to Salina & Alvin...for adding in my interesting collection of pictures...

Author Donald Ahrens in his text Meteorology Today describes
a rainbow as "one of the most spectacular light shows observed on earth".

The white light is a mixture of the colors of the visible spectrum. Black is a total absence of light.7 colours in visible light spektrum can be seen in a rainbow.  Each "coloured light" has its own wavelength and its own frequency, so we call it "monochromatic light" which means "light with one colour/one wavelength".
ColorFrequencyWavelength
violet668–789 THz380–450 nm
blue631–668 THz450–475 nm
cyan606–630 THz476–495 nm
green526–606 THz495–570 nm
yellow508–526 THz570–590 nm
orange484–508 THz590–620 nm
red400–484 THz620–750 nm

By the way, visible light is one of the 'member' of electromagnetic spectrum...We will learn this in subtopic 1.7. The following diagram shows the electromagnetic spectrum...observe where the red light lies...biggest wavelength in visible light spektrum.
Various wavelengths and positions of visible spectrum.
