How to play Bowling?

Bowling is a great sport for many reasons. The main reason is that it is great fun and a great way to spend time with friends and family! Does bowling has anything to do with physics? Can you suggest ways/ techniques to perform better in bowling games? This type of questions may come out in Paper2 Section B.

If talking about bowling, maybe we need to ask our expert: Jacqueline Sijore - ex-SMKBL 2010 to help us :)

Jacqueline Sijore (pictured with the gold medal and the mascot) of Malaysia became the first world champion of the 2011 Women's World Championships in Hong Kong, China, when the 19-year-old rookie defeated 2009 World Champion (Team) Son Yun-Hee (r.), Korea, 266-217, Sunday afternoon at Hong Kong Bowling City.

Both players alternated strikes and single-pin spares in the first three frames. All strikes were on lane 33 and all spares on lanes 34, both dressed with long oil (Paris pattern).

When Son struck on the right lane for the first time it automatically resulted in a three-bagger. However, it should remain her only strike on that lane until the fill ball.

Sijore started to strike in frame four and reeled off nine consecutive strikes to put the match away well before the final frame. Son had single-pin spares in the sixth, eighth, ninth and tenth frame, which sealed her fate. The Korean had to settle for the silver medal.

ARENA of Stars Genting menyaksikan 20 pasukan terbaik seluruh negara 
bertarung merebut gelaran juara tarian singa.

TARIAN singa ialah sejenis tarian tradisional yang melambangkan adat dan kebudayaan warisan masyarakat Cina. Bermula dengan sejarahnya, tarian ini dipercayai wujud sejak Dinasti Tang (618-907) lagi dalam kerabat diraja.

Selain memainkan peranan untuk menghiburkan penonton, tarian singa dipercayai merupakan pelindung dan mendatangkan tuah serta kekayaan kepada sesebuah keluarga.

Berusia lebih 2,000 tahun, tarian itu tidak lagi hanya berada di tempat asalnya. Di mana adanya orang Cina, di situlah adanya tarian singa, tidak terkecuali di Malaysia yang makmur dengan masyarakat majmuk termasuk kaum Cina.

Lantaran itu, Arena of Stars Genting, Pahang baru-baru ini gegak gempita apabila 20 pasukan tarian singa berkumpul untuk bertarung merebut gelaran juara dalam Kejohanan Tarian Singa Kebangsaan kali ke-15.

Menari ikut rentak muzik

Masing-masing tampil dengan gerakan dan aksi tersendiri dalam merebut hati juri. Seperti mana yang dilihat, tarian singa dimainkan oleh dua penari yang berselindung di bawah kostum singa dan sekumpulan pemain muzik yang terdiri daripada pemain gendang, gong dan simbal.

Dua penari yang masing-masing memegang kepala dan ekor singa akan meniru langkah-langkah singa dalam persembahan mereka. Semakin kuat bunyi muzik dimainkan, semakin bersemangatlah singa itu dalam aksinya.

Mungkin ada yang tidak faham mengenai langkah-langkah dalam tarian singa. Setiap langkah sebenarnya mempunyai maksud tertentu. Kisahnya bermula apabila seekor singa ingin memakan buah atau makanan yang kebiasaannya berada di cerun bukit.

Menurut pemain kepala singa, Eng Keng Soon, 25, keserasian di antara peserta pemegang kepala singa dan ekor singa amat penting untuk menghasilkan persembahan singa yang baik.

“Jika kedua-duanya gagal mencapai keserasian, persembahan tarian singa mungkin menghadapi kegagalan apabila kepala dan ekor singa berlanggar di antara satu sama lain. Kami perlu memastikan pergerakan singa berdasarkan lagu dan rentak pemain alat muzik yang merangkumi gendang, gong dan simbal,” katanya.

Seorang lagi penari muda, Ang Aik Meng, 17, juga mengakui bukan senang untuk menjadi seorang pemain yang berjaya. Dia sendiri perlu mengadakan latihan sebanyak enam sehingga tujuh jam setiap hari menjelang musim pertandingan.

“Peserta tarian singa juga menghadapi cabaran dalam persembahan dan pertandingan kerana risau kemalangan akan berlaku dalam persembahan dan pertandingan tersebut.

Fastest Cars In The World: Top 10 List 2011-2012

While most of us can only dream of owning the fastest car in the world, some will do whatever it takes to possess the most powerful speed. So, how fast are the fastest cars in the world?

Here are the 10 fastest cars available on the market (production models, as opposed to concept cars) measured by tested top speed (theoretical speeds do not count).

World's Fastest Cars:

1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport: 267 mph, 0-60 in 2.4 secs. Aluminum, Narrow Angle 8 Liter W16 Engine with 1200 hp, base price is $2,400,000. Although the Bugatti Veyron lost the title to SSC Ultimate Aero on March 2007, Bugatti challenge the record in Germany on July 10, 2010 with the new 2010 Super Sport Version and the Veyron once again claims the title of the fastest car in the world at 267 mph. The original Bugatti Veyron has a top speed of 253 mph, priced at $1,700,000 and equipped with 1001 hp.



#2 is a tie!

2. Hennessey Venom GT: 260 mph, 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, has a 6.2-liter LS9 Turbocharged V8 Twin Turbo V8 Engine producing 1200 hp, has a price tag of $950,000. The Venom GT has yet to be tested and proven, but could possibly hit a top speed of 275 mph. This might just be the Veyron Super Sport's closest competitor!


3.Koenigsegg Agera R: 260 mph, 0-60 in 2.9 secs. 5.0-liter V8 Engine with twin turbo’s, housing 1099 hp. Base price is $1,600,000. If you're into snow sports, the Agera R can be fitted with a Ski Box as well as winter tires, not that I would take one on a ski trip or anything like that. While the Agera R has a massive theoretical top speed, the current tested top speed is 260 mph. Expect this snow car to be the Bugatti's arch enemy for the next 5 years.

3. SSC Ultimate Aero: 257 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 secs. Twin-Turbo V8 Engine with 1183 hp, base price is $654,400. Tested in March 2007 by Guinness World Records, The SSC Ultimate Aero was the fastest car in the world from March 2007 to July 2010. On March 2011, the Koenigsegg Agera R also surpassed it, forcing this American made car to the #3 spot. Shelby SuperCars will continue their quest to reclaim the fastest car title, and their new SSC Tuatura might do the job (we'll just have to wait).


4. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo: 248 mph, 0-60 in 2.8 secs. Twin Turbo All Aluminum V8 Engine with 750 hp, base price is $555,000. Smooth and bad-ass. It will make you want to show it off non-stop.



5. Koenigsegg CCX:
245 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 secs. 90 Degree V8 Engine 806 hp, base price is $545,568. Made in Sweden, it is the older brother of the Agera R, only losing to 4 other supercars in the world.



6. McLaren F1: 240 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 secs. BMW S70/2 60 Degree V12 Engine with 627 hp, base price is $970,000. The fastest car in the 20th century with doors that looks like bat wings. Maybe Batman needs to order one and paint it black


7. Gumpert Apollo: 224 mph, 0-60 in 3.0 secs, 4.2 liter V8 Engine that houses 650 hp. Base price: $450,000. Gumpert claims that the Apollo was designed such that it could drive upside-down in a tunnel with speeds at 190 mph or above. Of course, no one has tested this yet.

8. Noble M600: 223 mph, 0-60 in 3.7 secs. Twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 Engine with 650 hp. Base price is $330,000. The Noble M600 also happens to be a very cool car. Its inconspicuous design sports a slender and contoured body which does not scream out for attention at every second of the day.

We have a tie for 9th and 10th places:

9. Lamborghini Aventador: 217 mph, 0-60 in 2.9 secs. V12 Engine with 700 hp, base price is $379,700. According to Lamborghini, Aventador is the name of a Bull that entered into battle at the Saragossa Arena on October 1993. This is the fastest bull in the world!


9. Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster: 217 mph, 0-60 in 3.4 secs. Twin turbocharged AMG V12 engine that produces 678 hp. Base price is $1,850,000. The Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster is a limited-edition, with five ever produced. It is the quintessential exotic and exclusive supercar.


9. Ferrari Enzo: 217 mph, 0-60 in 3.4 secs. F140 Aluminum V12 Engine with 660 hp, base price is $670,000. Only 399 were ever produced; the price goes up every time someone crashes.

9. Jaguar XJ220: 217 mph, 0-60 in 3.8 secs. Twin Turbo V6 Engine with 542 hp, base price was $650,000. Made in 1992, this car still has what it takes to make the list.


10. Ascari A10: 215 mph, 0-60 in 2.8 secs. 5.0 litre BMW V8 S62 Engine with 625 hp. Base price: $650,000. The company planned to produce 50 of these supercars at its factory in Banbury, England.



10. Pagani Zonda F: 215 mph, 0-60 in 3.5 secs. Mercedes Benz M180 V12 Engine with 650 hp, base price is $667,321. With a V12 motor, this baby can do much better.

Wanita India paling kerdil di dunia

SEORANG pengadil Guinness World Records, Rob Molloy (kanan) dan Dr. Manoj Pahukar (kiri) mengukur ketinggian Jyoti Amge di Nagpur semalam.

NAGPUR - Seorang pelajar perempuan berusia 18 tahun, Jyoti Amge yang setinggi cuma 61.95 sentimeter dinobatkan sebagai wanita paling kerdil di dunia oleh Guinness World Records di sini semalam.

Beberapa pegawai Guinness mengukur ketinggiannya sebelum dia dyang menghidap penyakit pertumbuhan terbantut, achondroplasia dinobatkan sebagai wanita paling kerdil di dunia.

Dia layak untuk disenaraikan dalam Guinness World Records kerana umurnya mencecah 18 tahun semalam.

"Saya berasa amat gembira untuk mendapatkan rekod ini," katanya yang menangis kegembiraan yang menurut bapanya dia bercita-cita untuk menjadi aktres Bollywood. Dia menerima sijil pengiktirafanGuinness sambil disaksikan oleh bapanya, Kisan, 55, dan ibunya, Ranjana, 50.

Rekod wanita paling kerdil di dunia sebelum ini dipegang oleh rakyat Amerika Syarikat, Bridgette Jordan yang setinggi 69.5 sentimeter. - Agensi

Fun With Archimedes' Principle


Yesterday lesson 'Application of Archimedes' Principle" with 4Setia was fun. By the end of the lesson my dear 4Setia knew that this principle is used in the rising/diving of a submarine, ascending/decending of a hotair balloon and in a hydrometer.


Interesting activity on creating a 'hot air balloon' by Samantha & Bernard of 4Setia 2011...
I wonder can anybody suggest a better way to make sure the hot air balloon they created fly upright?


From Chapter 3 (Forces & Pressure):
Archimedes' Principle  states that 
For any object (fully/partially) immerse in fluid (liquid/gas),
"Buoyant Force = Weight of fluid displaced"

From Chapter 2 (Forces & Motion):
a) If the object is floating, the net force = 0 since it is stationary
So "Buoyant Force = Weight of the object"

b)If the object is sinking/decending, net force is not zero
So "Buoyant Force < Weight of the object"

c)If the object is rising/ascending, net force is not zero
So "Buoyant Force > Weight of the object"

Means that in order to solve problem involving this principle,
 we need to really understand the definition & relate it to net force....

a - Weight of the object in the air
b - Weight of the object in the water (Apparent Weight of the object)
c - Weight of the empty beaker
d - Weight of the beaker and the displaced water
e = apparent loss in weight = Buoyant Force = a - b
f = weight of displaced water = d - c

So from the table above, which group is the winner?

Problem Solving
Format: Paper 2 (Section B)

Diagram 1 and 2 show two identical hydrometers are used to measure the density of Liquid P and Q.
Observe the diagrams and compare the followings:
1. The weight of the hydrometer.
2. The buoyant force acting on the hydrometer.
3. The level of the hydrometer (float higher/lower)
4. The volume of liquid displaced
5. The Weight of liquid displaced
6. The density of the liquid
Hence, State the relationship between the density of the liquid and the volume of liquid displaced.

2. How to increase the sensitivity of a hydrometer?

if it is use to measure the density of an acid?

Physics Video Making Competition 2011

My dear creative SMKBL's students,

Our Physics Department is organizing "Physics Video Making Competition 2011" for SMKBL Form 4 and Form 5 students...You can make a creative/ fun/ funny/ interesting video as long as it is related to Physics SPM syllabus. It can be about Force, Pressure, Heat, Light, Waves, Electricity, Electromagnetism, Electronic or Radioactivity...Here are the rules.

Rules:
1. Form a group consists of maximum 10 students
2. Discuss and create a 3-5 minutes video of physics using any software
3. Hand-in your application to me in a cd on or before 30 June 2011

Reward:
As a reward you will enjoy this:

1. You will be given perfect score for Construct No. 5 in PEKA.
2. Depends on the quality of physics knowledge in your video, it will be upload in this blog
3. Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Best Physics Video Of The Year


Tips:

1. You can become the actor/actress/singer/playing music...
2. Add caption n background music to make it more interesting
3. You can cut the movie slot that hv physics principle and combine them using movie maker & add captions
4. Video about the experiment...Use Paper3, Section B format...from inference till the analysis (graph)...
